Dementia Tutorial:
Diagnosis and Management in Primary Care

A Primary Care Based, Education/Research Project

This guide will help GPs and their primary health care team colleagues to:

  • Stimulate earlier identification of cases to help the patient and carer come to terms with diagnosis and prognosis
  • Provide an easy method of assessment, enabling the primary health care team to make collaborative plans for future services
  • Reach the correct diagnosis and detect any remedial pathology
  • Carry out a review of the patient's medication
  • Assess the patient's functional state and encourage optimum functioning
  • Anticipate and avert crises by assessment of need of social and domestic circumstances
  • Trigger the provision of social support and make appropriate referrals to other agencies
  • Examine the needs of carers and find ways of providing them with information and advice for the future
